The HC-SR501 PIR motion sensor is one of the easiest to connect to an Arduino -or any other microcontroller for that matter- and can also be used as a stand alone motion detector. According to HC-SR501 datasheet, the blockade time is 2.5s (Default) while the sensitivity and holding time can be adjusted. According to HC-SR501 schematic, the module has an onboard pyroelectric sensor, conditioning circuitry and a dome-shaped Fresnel lens.
